Nearly 2.6 million sportsmen and women consider themselves turkey hunters, making turkey hunting the most rapidly-growing form of hunting in the United States .

Many of those new hunters are from DeSoto County and a new workshop on Feb. 5 should help.

"If you've just started turkey hunting this workshop offers the most turkey hunting knowledge under one roof you are going to find," said event organizer Jim Robbins. "With the boom in turkey populations we are seeing more and more first-time turkey hunters. This workshop is designed to give some tips."

The daylong wild turkey workshop will be held at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia.

"We will have workshops on everything from calling techniques to when to use a decoy," Robbins said.

The seminar speakers include: Mississippi state biologist James Austin; Ken Morgan of Baton Rouge, La., a book author and call maker; Larry Dablemont of Bolivar, Mo., who has written a number of books and hundreds of articles on turkeys; Steve Payne of Senatobia and Oakhaven Wildlife, which specializes in cover crops and habitat enhancement; Jerry and Vicki Akin of Mountain View, Ark., who will demonstrate the incredible authenticity of the scratch box call; and Richard Hudson, who shows how to build and put into use the wingbone call.

One seminar will feature noted turkey expert Dr. George Hurst, who will talk about his ongoing research about the effect of predators on turkey populations.

Turkey populations have certainly grown in the United States . As late as the Great Depression, fewer than 30,000 wild turkeys were in the entire United States , according to the National Wild Turkey Federation. Work by the nation's hunters, state wildlife agencies and conservation groups has led to more than 6.4 million wild turkeys now roaming North America.

"Once you go turkey hunting you are hooked," Robbins said. "To be out there in the woods during a beautiful time in the spring is great. Even if you don't kill a bird everything that goes into it makes it an unbelievable experience."

Spring season for turkey hunting in Mississippi is March 15-May 1. Youth turkey hunting week is March 8-14.

Reservations for the workshop can be made at Northwest Community College by calling Patricia Lowder at (662) 562-3349. Tickets are $20 for ages 16 and up; $10 for 15 and under. Please reserve before Jan. 28. Potential exhibitors should call Robbins at (662) 363-2441.
